Welcome to the Department of Black American Studies (BAMS) homepage.  We are delighted that you have come to our site to find out more information about our major.  BAMS is a field of study concerned with the cultural, artistic, political, social, and historical experiences of people of African descent here and abroad. And more importantly, our major reveals the integral part these traditions and principles play in shaping global culture. The Department offers a BA degree as well as a minor.  Students have the option of completing a concentration in Black Gender Studies, Black Art, Literature and Culture, or Social Justice, Law, and Public Policy.  Many of our students choose to double major.  Students have numerous opportunities to engage in student learning, research, and community projects on and off campus.  Students also have opportunities to study abroad in South Africa, Ghana, Barbados, and Egypt with faculty.  Many of our graduates go on to distinguish themselves in post-baccalaureate studies in fields such as Law, Business, Education, Medicine, and History.  Our core and joint faculty span the spectrum of intellectual inquiry, and have always offered excellent mentoring, engaging scholarship, and stellar teaching and advisement.
